Reflections from a New BEST Team Member

Nathan Valle is a recent Political Science and Communications grad joining BEST Mobility this summer to support Seniors on the Move programming and marketing. Recently, Nathan shared his reflections on the impact of the Seniors on the Move program and why this work matters.

Introduction and Role at BEST

Hey, I’m Nathan! I’m the Marketing Coordinator here at BEST, as part of the Seniors on the Move program. Seniors on the Move is a program geared towards supporting seniors’ mobility and providing them with transit training on how to navigate one of North America’s best transportation systems. As the Marketing Coordinator I reach out to organizations who prioritize working closely with senior populations. We work with recreation centres and seniors societies to give educational presentations and guided experiences on transit. We’re also getting ready for more collaborations with Vancouver Cycling Without Age!

Seniors on the Move is a program that I have heavily enjoyed working on so far. Our workshops aren’t only about giving seniors information on transit; they are about supporting them to make connections with the broader community.

On Why This Work Matters

The first workshop that I attended opened my eyes to the importance of what we do at BEST. We were able to create connections with seniors by spending time with them during a stage of life when staying socially connected can sometimes be challenging. I can’t speak to how difficult their lives are on a daily basis, nor can I articulate the intense emotions they feel. What I can speak to is how I saw their day become a little brighter by taking part in one of our workshops and guided trips. Even if only for a few hours, we had the opportunity to connect with seniors, build their confidence using transit, enjoy a memorable excursion, and for many it became a highlight of their week. Through this program, we aim to create moments that enrich the lives of the senior population in Metro Vancouver.

Looking Ahead

I try my best (no pun intended) as the Marketing Coordinator to ensure that each workshop runs extremely well. This summer, I’m most excited to plan more workshops with seniors and take them on excursions! It’s super fulfilling getting to see the senior population flourish in Vancouver.
