Executive Director

About the Role

We seek an Executive Director deeply committed to equity, climate action, and sustainable, accessible transportation. At BEST, we believe mobility is a human right and a catalyst for environmental and social change.

The Executive Director will work closely with the Board and staff to lead strategy, operations, programs, fundraising, and advocacy. This role is central to advancing our mission across British Columbia, with a strong focus on reconciliation, inclusion, and building resilient communities through practical, low-carbon mobility solutions.

  • Location: Metro Vancouver (Primarily On-Site with Some Hybrid Flexibility)

  • Type: Full-Time

  • Salary: $90,000 – $125,000 annually + Performance-Based Bonus Potential

  • Reports to: Board of Directors

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Management

  • Lead and execute the strategic plan in collaboration with the Board and Senior Management.

  • Provide regular performance reports, strategic recommendations, and risk assessments.

  • Monitor public policy developments and guide BEST’s advocacy work.

  • Facilitate Board development and strategic planning retreats.

Financial and Operational Oversight

  • Oversee BEST’s financial health in partnership with the Controller and external accountants.

  • Recommend annual budgets, track spending, and ensure financial transparency.

  • Ensure compliance with policies, manage risks, and support organizational accountability.

Organizational & Project Management

  • Provide high-level operational oversight and strategic alignment across departments.

  • Collaborate with the Operations Manager and Project Manager to track deliverables, budgets, and timelines.

  • Ensure organizational policies, SOPs, and controls are up to date and followed.

Fundraising & Development

  • Lead BEST’s fundraising strategy and donor communications.

  • Identify and secure grants, sponsorships, and individual donations.

  • Grow BEST’s membership and strengthen relationships with donors and partners.

Human Resources & Culture

  • Provide strategic leadership in HR development, compliance, and staff support.

  • Champion a supportive, inclusive, and learning-centred workplace.

  • Oversee all major personnel decisions, contracts, and organizational policies.

Community & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as BEST’s public representative.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with funders, government, and the community.

  • Guide marketing and public campaigns that advance our mission.

Skills & Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 5 years of senior leadership experience in a nonprofit or mission-driven setting

  • Proven track record in operations, fundraising, and strategic leadership

  • Strong budget management, HR oversight, and policy development skills

  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement abilities

  • Deep understanding of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) principles

  • Proficiency in productivity and collaboration tools (e.g., Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom)

Preferred Assets

  • Knowledge of sustainable transportation, mobility justice, and community advocacy

  • Experience with CRMs, donor platforms (e.g., Salesforce NPSP, Little Green Light)

  • Familiarity with digital marketing tools (Mailchimp, Canva, Squarespace)

  • Understanding of Google Analytics and digital security best practices

Work Environment

  • Primarily in-person with flexibility for some hybrid work

  • Occasional evening/weekend hours for events or meetings
