Here you will find more about Walk30 and how to join this fun challenge!

What’s the Walk30 Challenge?

Walk30 is a fun campaign coordinated by Better Environmentally Sound Transportation (BEST) through its Living Streets program. The campaign gets people walking for recreation, physical fitness, mental health, and well-being.

The goal is to encourage people to walk at least 30 minutes a day during a 5 week period.

There are no specific routes or distances to walk. Each participant is free to walk anywhere they want.

5 WEEKS

  • Active transportation

  • Social connectedness and mental wellness

  • Inclusion and accessibility

  • Climate change and environment

  • Walking in times of changes

FUN FRIENDLY CHALLENGE

Community Engagement

We engage with employer groups and workplaces and encourage them to form “teams’’ that can compete against others in the community.

Who can sign up?

Everybody! As an individual or as a team with your colleagues, family, neighbours, resident association, class…

Prizes and Incentives

We support small local businesses by offering prizes (valued at between $25 to $100) to registered Walk30 Challenge participants each week.

Who wins?

This depends on who you challenge. Previously, since the mayors of the City of New Westminster and the City of Burnaby were the ones challenging each other, the winner was based on a ratio of minutes walked per participant of each City.

ALIGNMENT WITH COMMUNITY PLANNING

The Walk30 Challenge supports and reinforces the active transportation and healthy living goal described in municipal plans and local health authorities.

As many municipalities share similar objectives in terms of transportation planning, social planning, parks and recreation, and community services, the Walk30 Challenge initiative presents a good opportunity for regional cooperation and fun, healthy, competition!

STEERING COMMITTEE

A steering committee helps promote and guide local versions of Walk30. Committees usually include representatives from municipal staff, health authorities, school districts, and other stakeholder groups.

The steering committee provides direction to the project team and activates resources in their personal and professional networks to raise awareness of, and participation in, the Walk30 Challenge. BEST works with the committee to identify and communicate with community engagement partners.

Participation relies on pre-event outreach to libraries, community centers, recreation facilities, seniors’ centres, local businesses, public transit, school system contacts (trustees, administrators, principals, teachers), and community health organizations.

FUNDING MODEL

Walk30 is supported by BC Gaming Grants, participating municipalities, TransLink, local health authorities, and local businesses. We are always happy to have new partners!
