Meet a New BEST Team Member

Meet Maggie, a UBC planning student joining BEST Mobility this summer to support Eco-Voyage youth programming. BEST’s Eco-Voyage program helps youth build confidence using sustainable transportation while learning to navigate their communities safely and independently. Read on to learn more about Maggie’s passion for safer streets and youth mobility.

Introduction and role at BEST

Hi, I’m Maggie, a current student at UBC’s School of Community and Regional Planning! I’ll be supporting BEST on Eco-Voyage, specifically working on delivering programming at high schools or youth focused organizations. I moved to Vancouver from Toronto last summer, and have been enjoying getting outside to take advantage of all this city has to offer. On the weekends, I love to go for a bike ride or a long run on the seawall, or knit and read a book in a park.

What are you looking forward to working on in the role?

I’m looking forward to working with younger audiences, and getting them excited about different forms of transportation! Being able to navigate your city independently is such a formative part of being a teenager, and I hope our work can empower youth to move safely and confidently throughout the world.

What are you hoping to learn during your time at BEST?

I’m looking forward to learning more about the ways different modes of transportation interact in Vancouver, and what can be done to improve our current systems. As a planning student, I’m passionate about creating streets that are safe and inviting to all, and working alongside the public is a great way to learn about different needs.

If you had to pick, what is your favourite mode of transportation?

My favourite mode of transportation is probably biking - I love the feeling of freedom when you’re sailing down a big hill, and the satisfaction of moving from point A to point B with just the power of your legs.

Do you have a favourite bike route, transit line, or neighbourhood walk in the City?

I love a walk in Pacific Spirit Park, or a bike ride down Adanac to a brewery.
